Free sulfurous waterfalls that the Etruscans bathed in. Still flowing. Still free.

The Cascate del Mulino at Saturnia are a series of natural travertine terraces where sulfurous water (37°C, constant) spills from pool to pool on its way to the river below. The Etruscans built the road to this spring. The Romans bathed here. The water flows at exactly the same temperature it always has — a precise 37°C, body temperature. There is no charge to use the free cascades; the adjacent luxury resort uses the same source and charges considerably more for the same water.

Worth knowing

  • Constant 37°C — body temperature — from an ancient Etruscan spring

  • The Cascate del Mulino are entirely free to use and have been for millennia

  • Travertine formations built up over centuries by the mineral-rich water

An insider's tip

Park at the free roadside layby on Via Follonata and walk 200m to the cascades. Skip the resort entrance fee — the free cascades are more beautiful and the water is identical.

Don't leave without

Find the deepest naturally-formed pool at the top of the cascade system and soak for at least 30 minutes. The sulfur smell fades after five minutes and the buoyancy is remarkable.
