A free wild spring at the start of the Laugavegur trail. Rhyolite mountains, no facilities.
Landmannalaugar sits in the heart of Iceland's central highland wilderness, surrounded by multicolored rhyolite mountains in rust, green, black, and ochre. The spring itself — a natural hot stream mixing with a cold river — creates a perfect soaking temperature where they meet. There are no entrance fees, no facilities, no crowds management — just a warden's hut, a campsite, and a wild spring in one of the most otherworldly landscapes on earth. Access is by 4WD only, requiring river crossings.

An insider's tip
The F208 road requires a 4WD with high clearance. Do not attempt in a standard car. Check the Safetravel Iceland website for road conditions on the morning of your visit.
Don't leave without
Soak at the confluence of the hot spring and cold river and look up at the rhyolite ridge above. This is the view — multicolored mountains, steam, total silence.
