Designed by Mimar Sinan in 1584. The gold standard of Ottoman hammam architecture.
Commissioned by Nurbanu Sultan and designed by Mimar Sinan — the Ottoman Empire's greatest architect — Çemberlitaş Hamamı has been washing Istanbulites for over 440 years. The layout is the classical double hammam: twin domed halls for men and women, each centered on a large göbek taşı (navel stone) — the heated marble platform where the kese scrub and foam massage are performed. The main dome is pierced by 36 star-shaped skylights.

An insider's tip
Pay for the full service — kese scrub, köpük (foam massage), and oil massage. The 45-minute ritual on the marble slab is the whole point.
Don't leave without
Lie on the central göbek taşı and let the 16th-century dome settle above you. The geometry of light through the star-pierced dome is breathtaking.
